Riverfront Regional Park drowning victim identified

A Santa Rosa man who drowned in a small lake at a county park was identified Monday as Cortez Holmes, 54.

Holmes was with a friend at Riverfront Regional Park Saturday. The friend had gone swimming and Holmes had gone onto the water on an inflatable inner tube, said a Sonoma County sheriff's official.

About 20 feet from shore, Holmes was flipping onto his belly on the tube when he fell off, said Sgt. Brad Burke. Holmes apparently wasn't able to swim.

His friend tried repeatedly to pull the man up but couldn't. Others at the park also attempted to help, officials said.

A Marin County sheriff's dive team found Holmes' body Saturday night about 25 feet down in the murky water and retrieved him from the lake.

An autopsy was to be performed Monday afternoon.

The park, which borders the Russian River, is on Eastside Road, west of Windsor. The two lakes there are former gravel pits.

Signs warning agains swimming and wading are posted at the park.
